Fathers have eaten green grapes, thus their children’s teeth are on edge.
The minute I read this scripture, the image of the corrupt priests who molested children and young men around the world came to mind. They are the fathers who ate the green grapes, the ones who undertook the capitulation to their base desires and now the children’s teeth are on edge.
The victims of the abuse are not just the ones who actually suffered at the hands of these perverse men, but the whole Church herself is full of the children of the Father whose teeth are on edge. We are so horrified and outraged by the tales of innocence destroyed and the deliberate shoving under the rug by those in authority. It sickens us even to our stomachs that the shepherds whom we trusted with our spiritual health were “wolves in shepherd’s clothing”, as Charlie Johnston wrote in his blog.
But read on in Ezekiel and hear the promise of our dear, loving Father in heaven:
I will judge you…each one according to his ways, says the Lord God. Turn and be converted from all of your crimes, that they may be no cause of guilt for you. Cast a way from you all the crimes you have committed and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. v.30-31
We can have hope for our wounded selves, even for the most deplorable of us. We can hope in God for the healing of our most painful wounds.
Heavenly father, I pray for the souls of the victims, those who hurt them and those who covered it up, please bring your justice to bear and your mercy. ~Amen
